A Look Ahead...May 2010

So the calendar is finally looking to fill up once again after a short stint of few big name titles hitting the release schedule. This month's big release for me has to be Red Dead Redemption for the PS3 and Xbox 360. My preview can be seen here. It really looks to be shaping up fantastically well, with the multiplayer trailer whetting my appetite even more for its 21st May release. Elsewhere, long known yet long delayed psychological thriller Alan Wake finally hits our shelves on the 14th- whether it'll live up to its billing is another matter but it looks interesting nonetheless and I'm eager to get into it. Skate 3 is released on the same day, EA's skateboarding series that all but saw the end to the dominance of the Tony Hawks games. And no, this doesn't come with a plastic peripheral!

The second title in Sony's push of “Play, Create, Share”, ModNation Racers for the PS3, is in the same vein to LittleBigPlanet, which allows gamers to create race tracks, play them, and share with others through the Playstation Network. Hopefully, the community aspect can be better integrated than LBP's which had many a server problem and suffered from slow menu load times. Being a huge fan of LittleBigPlanet, and a budding creator, this Mario Kart-esque game looks really great.

So a huge wait to the next big racer, and two come along at once. Two high-octane, adrenaline fuelled, multiplayer-driven racers no less, in the form of Bizarre Creations' Blur which has their own PGR vibe with a mix of power-ups and weapons to dynamically affect the racing. Similarly, in Split/Second: Velocity, players take part in a fictional game show in which races are played out within destructible environments where players can trigger destructions to cause harrowing chaos.

Action-RPG Alpha Protocol by Obsidian Entertainment is also released on May 28th. The third-person spy-espionage action title with a complex dialogue system and involving storyline should be an entertaining thrill ride. Little is being said about it though, which is always a bad sign.

Have a look at my 'Upcoming Releases' page for a full schedule.
